DSM-V: Five-Part Series On The new Psychiatric Bible

Excellent work from the Vancouver Sun.

Sharon Kirkey reports.

April 26, 2010: Critics fear proposals for a fifth edition of the diagnostic guide used by psychiatrists worldwide could unnecessarily trigger wholesale "epidemics" of mental illness and expose millions more adults and children to potentially harmful psychiatric drugs.

April 27, 2010: If accepted, TDD (temper dysregulation disorder) could soon become as entrenched in our vernacular as ADD. The fear is that TDD could open the door to a psychiatric diagnosis of any child with a bad temper.

April 28, 2010: "Psychosis risk syndrome" is the suggested diagnosis for "soft" symptoms of psychosis in people at risk for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders before they develop full-fledged delusions and hallucinations. Critics say it would lead to a many false positives.

April 29, 2010: Binge eating disorder would legitimize a diagnosis for what doctors say they see daily -- an increase in people who have lost utter control over their eating.

April 30, 2010: Modern science and experience is allowing better and updated diagnoses, some say. Skeptics say the new manual is more about psychiatry defining behaviours and reactions to life's usual letdowns as mental dysfunction, which could lead to overmedication.
